Places and views
The art gallery
The art gallery in Volterra is at just two minutes walk from the classroom in a 15th century palace housing an important collection of paintings from local monasteries and churches and many medieval and contemporary works of art.
Rosso Fiorentino
The star is the wood panel of the Deposition, signed and dated 1521 by Rosso Fiorentino. It is definitely a masterpiece of the Tuscan Mannerist painter. The composition is dictated by the actual form of the pala.
The etruscan museum
Founded in 1761 after the donation of a rich archeological collection to “the citizens of the city of Volterra”, including a library of more than 50.000 volumes from a noble abbot, Mario Guarnacci.
Here you may view some of the most interesting etruscan funeral steles and jewellery, some villanovan remains and discover the history of one of the most important cities of the past world.
Incontri-Viti Palace
The facade of this palace, right beside the classroom, is forty three metres in length and sixteen metres wide. Two incomplete wings enclose two small inner courtyards on which the windows of the theatre Persio Flacco look out upon. The original design contained a large porticoed courtyard with a view of the valley. In 1816 the Incontri family sold part of the ground floor including the unfinished courtyard where later the theatre was built.
The roman theater
Down the road from the classroom, you'll find the ruins of an impressive Roman Theater.
The archeological park
Few minutes away, like anything, you will have some relax inside the beautyful archeological park of the city.
A good chance to exercise with drawing trees and natural landscapes.
